Business insurance in Washington
The insurance your contract asks for.
Most small businesses here don't buy insurance because they decided to — they buy it because a client, a landlord or a licence demands a certificate by Friday. We write general liability, work trucks, tools and contractor bonds, and we can get you the certificate the same day.
We only need 3 things to tell you if you can pay less
- 1Your name
- 2Your address
- 3Your date of birth
That's it. We do the rest and tell you whether there's something cheaper for you.

Four pieces
What a small business in Washington actually needs
Four things cover most of what a cleaning crew, a landscaper, a contractor or a small shop is ever asked for. You rarely need all four on day one.
General liability
Damage or injury you cause while working. $1M per occurrence / $2M aggregate is the limit almost every contract names. From about $55 a month for a small crew.
Commercial auto
If the truck or van is used for work, it needs a commercial policy. This is the single most common gap we find — and the one that turns into a denied claim.
Tools and equipment
Inland marine, which is an odd name for coverage on the mowers, ladders and power tools in the back of the truck. Theft out of a work vehicle is common here.
Contractor bond
$12,000 for a general contractor, $6,000 for a specialty contractor, required by L&I to register. It protects your customer, not you — but you can't register without it.

One honest exception
Workers' comp is the one we can't sell you
And neither can anyone else. Washington is one of four monopolistic states — with Ohio, Wyoming and North Dakota — where workers' compensation is sold only by the state through L&I. No private carrier in Washington can write it, and any agency that tells you otherwise is selling you something else. Here's how the L&I process works, and what your business still needs from a private carrier.
What it costs
The spread on a small general liability policy
Carriers price trades very differently: the company that's cheapest for a cleaning crew is rarely the cheapest for a roofer. That's the whole argument for quoting six.

Carrier 1: cheapest for this profile
An example of how we compare: for the same profile, the gap between the cheapest and the most expensive carrier is $37 a month. We don't label which carrier is which because the order changes for every person — you get the name with your quote. Your real price depends on your age, your ZIP code, your record and what each carrier approves.

We're in Auburn and Tacoma, in the middle of the Kent valley, so this is who walks through the door.
Cleaning companies
Residential and commercial crews. GL plus commercial auto plus the equipment in the van. Usually needed because a property manager asked for a certificate.
Landscapers and lawn care
Seasonal crews, trailers and mowers. Tools coverage matters more here than anywhere else, because everything valuable lives in the trailer.
Contractors and trades
GL, the bond for L&I registration, and the trucks. We handle the bond and the insurance together so the registration doesn't stall.
Small shops and offices
A business owner's policy that bundles liability with the contents and the loss of income if you have to close for repairs.
What people ask us most
Business insurance questions
How much is general liability insurance in Washington?
For a small crew, from about $55 a month. It depends on your trade, your payroll, your revenue and the limits your contract requires. A cleaning company and a roofer with the same revenue pay very different prices.
How fast can I get a certificate of insurance?
Same day in most cases, often within the hour. Send us the contract language or the email from the client — it usually names the exact limits required.
Do I need commercial auto for my work truck?
If the vehicle is used for work, yes. A personal auto policy can deny the claim when the accident happened during a job, and that denial usually arrives at the worst possible moment.
Do you sell workers' compensation?
No private agency in Washington can. It's a monopolistic state and workers' comp comes only from L&I. We explain the whole process on our workers' comp page.
What bond do I need to register as a contractor?
$12,000 for a general contractor and $6,000 for a specialty contractor, plus proof of liability insurance. We can handle the bond and the GL policy in the same conversation.
Starting prices are the lowest monthly premium we've placed for a qualifying driver or household in Washington, not a quote. Your price depends on your ZIP code, your record, your vehicle and what each carrier approves.
