Car insurance in Washington

Car insurance in Washington, quoted six ways.

Washington requires 25/50/10 liability to put a car on the road. What it costs you depends far more on which company you ask than on how you drive — for the same driver the gap between our cheapest and most expensive carrier is $41 a month. Liability only starts at $60/mo.

Coverage in plain English

What the state actually requires

Washington's minimum is 25/50/10: $25,000 of bodily injury per person, $50,000 per accident and $10,000 of property damage. That's the legal floor, and it's worth knowing that $10,000 of property damage doesn't replace a three-year-old truck. Driving without insurance is a ticket, and the fine is smaller than what most people pay for six months of liability.

  • Liability only

The legal minimum. Covers what you do to other people and their property, and nothing that happens to your car. From $60 a month.

  • Full coverage

Liability plus collision and comprehensive. Required by every lender while the car is financed. Tacoma averages $224 a month, the highest in the state.

  • Uninsured motorist (UM/UIM)

Covers you when the other driver has nothing. In a state where plenty of people drive uninsured, it's the cheapest real protection on the policy.

  • PIP

Medical bills for you and your passengers regardless of fault. Washington carriers have to offer it — you have to decline it in writing.

What it costs

Why the same driver gets six different prices

Every carrier scores a driver differently: one punishes a lapse in coverage, another cares more about your ZIP code, a third rewards bundling. Nothing about you changes between these rows — only who's doing the maths.

Carrier 1: cheapest for this profile

An example of how we compare: for the same profile, the gap between the cheapest and the most expensive carrier is $41 a month. We don't label which carrier is which because the order changes for every person — you get the name with your quote. Your real price depends on your age, your ZIP code, your record and what each carrier approves.

Hard-to-place policies

The policies other agents won't write

A captive agent with one company has one answer. These are the three situations where having six carriers stops being a talking point and starts being the whole difference.

  1. 1

    You need an SR-22

After a DUI, a lapse or driving uninsured, Licensing needs a certificate filed by your carrier. Not every company files them. Two of ours do, and we file the same day you buy.

  2. 2

Your licence is from another country

A Mexican, Guatemalan or Honduran licence doesn't disqualify you. It changes which carriers will quote you and at what price — which is exactly the kind of question six companies answers better than one.

  3. 3

    You've had a lapse

A month without coverage moves you into a different rating tier for years. Some carriers forgive it faster than others, and the difference is worth real money.

What people ask us most

Car insurance questions we get every week

How much is car insurance in Washington?

Liability only starts around $60 a month for a qualifying driver. Full coverage averages $224 a month in Tacoma, $219 in Seattle, $201 in Bellevue and $178 in Spokane. Your own number depends on your ZIP code, your record, your car and your age — which is why the only honest answer is a quote.

Can I get insured without a social security number?

Yes. We write car insurance with an ITIN, a passport or a consular ID. It narrows which carriers will quote you; it doesn't stop you from being insured or from being legal on the road.

Can I insure a car with a foreign driver's licence?

In many cases yes, with fewer carriers and at a higher price than a Washington licence. Once you get your state licence, tell us — it's usually worth re-shopping the policy that same week.

What is an SR-22 and do I need one?

An SR-22 isn't insurance. It's a certificate your carrier files with the Department of Licensing proving you're covered, usually required for three years after a DUI, a lapse or driving uninsured. We file it the same day you buy the policy.

Is it cheaper to bundle car and home insurance?

Usually, but not always, and not with every carrier. Bundling is one of the things we check across all six — sometimes two separate policies with two different companies still beats the bundle.

Do I have to cancel my current policy first?

No, and you shouldn't. Get the new policy issued first, then cancel. A gap of even a few days counts as a lapse and it follows you for years.

Starting prices are the lowest monthly premium we've placed for a qualifying driver or household in Washington, not a quote. Your price depends on your ZIP code, your record, your vehicle and what each carrier approves.
