General liability insurance cost in Washington: what small businesses pay in 2026
A general liability quote can come back at $40 a month or $400, and both can be fair. The difference is almost always the trade, the size of the crew and the limits the contract asks for.
The short answer
General liability insurance in Washington averages about $153 a month for a small business with one to four employees, and about $76 a month for a one-person operation, according to MoneyGeek's 2026 Washington report for a $1 million / $2 million policy. For a small crew, our quotes start at around $55 a month.
The trade matters most. In the same report, averages run from about $31 a month for tech and IT firms to about $459 a month for construction and contracting. Payroll, claims history and the limits your contracts require do the rest.
Contractors also have a legal floor: to register with L&I they need at least $200,000 of public liability and $50,000 of property damage, or $250,000 combined, plus a $30,000 bond for general contractors or $15,000 for specialty contractors.

What moves the price of general liability?
Carriers price general liability on how likely your work is to hurt someone or damage their property, and how big that claim could be. A roofer on ladders and an accountant at a desk sit at opposite ends. Within the same trade, four things do most of the moving.
- Your trade and the work you actually do. Describe it precisely; a vague description can price you into a riskier class.
- Payroll or revenue. More work means more exposure.
- Claims history. A clean record is the cheapest discount there is.
- Limits and deductible. $2 million aggregate costs more than $1 million, but it is what many contracts require.
What does Washington require from contractors?
To register as a contractor with L&I you need general liability of at least $200,000 for public liability and $50,000 for property damage, or a $250,000 combined single limit, plus a surety bond: $30,000 for general contractors and $15,000 for specialty contractors since July 1, 2024.
The bond and the insurance protect different people. The bond protects your customer if you don't finish the job; the insurance protects you when something goes wrong. We explain the difference in what licensed, bonded and insured really means.

How much general liability coverage should you buy?
Buy what your contracts ask for, and check before you sign them. The state minimum for contractors is a floor, but most general contractors, property managers and commercial landlords require $1 million per occurrence and $2 million aggregate, and some ask to be named as additional insured on your certificate.
A property manager will usually ask for the certificate before you start; here is what that certificate has to show.
What does general liability cover, and what doesn't it?
It pays when your work injures someone or damages their property: a customer trips over your cord, paint lands on a client's floor, a ladder cracks a window. It does not cover your own employees, your work truck or your tools; each of those needs its own policy.
| What happened | Which policy pays |
|---|---|
| A client trips over your equipment | General liability |
| Your employee is hurt on the job | Workers' compensation, sold only by L&I in Washington |
| Your work truck hits another car | Commercial auto |
| Your tools are stolen from the van | Tools and equipment (inland marine) |
