Renters insurance in Washington
Renters insurance from $12 a month.
It's the cheapest policy we sell and the one most people skip. It covers your things, it covers you if someone is hurt in your apartment, and it pays for somewhere to stay if the building becomes unliveable. Your landlord's policy covers the building — not one thing inside your unit.
We only need 3 things to tell you if you can pay less
- 1Your name
- 2Your address
- 3Your date of birth
That's it. We do the rest and tell you whether there's something cheaper for you.

The part people get wrong
What your landlord's insurance does not cover
This is the single most common misunderstanding we hear. The building's policy covers the building. If a pipe bursts upstairs, the landlord's insurer repairs the ceiling and pays you nothing for the furniture, the clothes, the television or the laptop.
Personal property
Everything you own inside the unit, whether it's stolen, burned or soaked. Take replacement cost, not actual cash value — the difference is a couple of dollars a month.
Liability
If a guest is hurt in your apartment, or your dog bites someone, or the bath you left running damages the unit below. This is the part that turns a $12 policy into a serious one.
Loss of use
If the building becomes unliveable, this pays for the hotel and the meals while it's repaired. It's the coverage nobody thinks about and the one people end up needing.
Proof for your lease
Most Washington landlords now require $100,000 of liability. We send the certificate to your property manager the same day.
No credit check. Just a name, an address and a date of birth.
What it costs
Why renters insurance is worth shopping even at $12
The dollar amounts are small, but the spread is proportionally the widest of any policy we write — the most expensive carrier costs nearly double the cheapest for the same coverage.

Carrier 1: cheapest for this profile
An example of how we compare: for the same profile, the gap between the cheapest and the most expensive carrier is $9 a month. We don't label which carrier is which because the order changes for every person — you get the name with your quote. Your real price depends on your age, your ZIP code, your record and what each carrier approves.

City averages measured across Washington in July 2026. Ours start lower because we quote six carriers and take the one that fits your building.
Tacoma
$23 a month on average, the highest of the cities we serve. Our starting price is $12.
Auburn
$20 a month on average. The Auburn, Kent and Federal Way corridor is where most of our renters policies are written.

What people ask us most
Renters insurance questions
How much is renters insurance in Washington?
From about $12 a month with us. The city average is $23 in Tacoma and $20 in Auburn. Price depends on the building, your ZIP code and how much personal property you're covering.
Is renters insurance required in Washington?
Not by law, but almost every landlord and property manager now requires it in the lease, usually with at least $100,000 of liability.
Does it cover my roommate too?
Only if they're named on the policy. Two unrelated roommates normally need two policies — and at $12 each, that's still the cheapest argument you'll ever avoid.
Does renters insurance cover my car?
No. Anything inside the car is covered by your renters policy; the car itself needs car insurance. We can quote both at once and check whether bundling them is cheaper.
What if my building floods?
Water coming from inside the building — a burst pipe, an overflowing bath upstairs — is covered. Rising water from outside is a flood and needs a separate policy.

Twelve dollars a month, and it takes two minutes.
