How much does insurance cost in Washington?
Short answer: less than most people think for the basics, and a lot more than they think once you add full coverage or live in the wrong ZIP code. These are market floors, not quotes — they tell you whether what you're paying is in a reasonable range or way above it.
| Coverage | Starts at | Assuming |
|---|---|---|
| Car — Western WA | from $60/mo | State minimum (25/50/10), clean record |
| Car — Eastern WA | from $40/mo | Same coverage; less traffic, lower rates |
| Renters | from $12/mo | About the same statewide. The cheapest policy there is |
| Home | custom quote | Driven by county and wildfire risk, not by the house alone |
| Mobile home | custom quote | Needs its own policy; a standard home policy won't cover it |
| Life | custom quote | Locked in at your age today, so earlier is cheaper |
The car and renters floors come from 2026 Washington market ranges checked against our own book of business. They're the starting point for a good profile, not a guaranteed price: your real number comes from your record, your ZIP code and your vehicle.
Your ZIP code moves the price more than the carrier does
This is what surprises people who move within the state. Same person, same car, same record, and the bill changes. It isn't negotiable and it isn't the company's mood: it's the rate filed for that ZIP code.
- Car, full coverage: Tacoma averages $224 a month, Seattle $219, Bellevue $201 and Spokane $178.
- Car, state minimum: Kent is the priciest of the cities measured at $64 a month, against $30 in Kennewick and Richland.
- Renters: from about $15 in Kennewick to $23 in Tacoma, with Seattle and Yakima around $17.

Home insurance is the one that flips east to west
For cars, Eastern Washington is the cheap side of the state. For houses it's the opposite. Wildfire risk has pushed premiums up hard east of the Cascades, and it's also why some owners get a non-renewal letter with no claim on file. If that happened to you, it doesn't mean you're uninsurable — it usually means that carrier pulled back from your area while others didn't. Six carriers under one roof is exactly what helps in that spot. More on that in our home insurance page.
How to compare quotes without getting fooled by the price
Putting six prices in a row and taking the lowest is the fastest way to pay less for something that won't cover you. Check these before you look at the number:
- Same limits. Washington's minimum is 25/50/10: $25,000 per injured person, $50,000 per accident and $10,000 for property damage. One crash with two people in the other car can blow through that, and the rest comes out of your pocket.
- Same deductible. Going from $500 to $1,000 lowers the monthly bill — it also means you put up more the day you file a claim.
- Uninsured motorist. Plenty of drivers in Washington have no insurance. If one hits you and you don't carry this, there's nobody to collect from.
- PIP. It pays medical bills for you and your passengers no matter who was at fault. You can reject it in writing, and many people do without knowing what they gave up.
- Rental reimbursement and towing. Cheap to add, and they're the ones people actually use.
When one quote comes in far below the rest, the first question isn't which company it is — it's whether it's quoting the same coverage. Most of the time it isn't. Our car insurance page goes deeper on choosing limits.
What we need for a real quote
The calculator above gives you a reference without asking for anything. For a real quote across all six carriers we need three things: your name, your address and your date of birth. If you already have a policy, send a photo of the declarations page — comparing coverage against coverage is the only honest way to tell whether you're overpaying. If your current price is already good, we'll say so and leave it alone. Or start at our free quote page.
Insurance cost questions
How much is car insurance in Washington per month?
With the state minimum (25/50/10) and a clean record, it starts around $60 a month in Western Washington and $40 in the east. Full coverage runs much higher: Tacoma, the priciest city measured, averages $224 a month.
How much is homeowners insurance in Washington?
It depends on where the house sits more than on anything else. West of the Cascades, Washington is one of the cheaper states in the country. East of them, wildfire risk keeps pushing premiums up — in Franklin County they rose about 70% between 2018 and 2024. That's why we quote home insurance case by case instead of publishing a single number.
How much is renters insurance in Washington?
From about $12 a month, and it's the one coverage that barely changes across the state: the city averages run from about $15 in Kennewick to $23 in Tacoma.
Why does the same coverage cost more in one Washington city than another?
Because rates are filed by ZIP code. For the same driver and the same minimum coverage, Kent averages $64 a month and the Tri-Cities $30. The only difference is where the car is parked at night.
Does the calculator ask for my personal information?
No. It doesn't ask for your name, phone or email, and it doesn't store anything. It's a market reference so you know what to expect before you talk to anyone.
Is the cheapest quote always the best deal?
Not always. A low price usually comes from lower limits, a higher deductible or dropped coverages you only notice after a crash, like rental reimbursement or uninsured motorist. That's why we compare coverage against coverage, not price against price.
